The Golden Globe Awards are a little more relaxed—and a little bit more daring—than the Oscars. From the risky red carpet styles to the risqué humor the hosts pack into their monologues, it’s a night of taking chances.
To gear up for the 73rd annual bash (airing on NBC Sunday at 8 p.m. EST), fashion expert, author, stylist and television host George Kotsiopoulos gave us some insight into what to expect on this unexpected red carpet.
What makes the fashions at the Golden Globes different from any other award show?
While the Golden Globes is still a super formal red carpet event, it’s not as serious as the Oscars, allowing actresses to be more daring with their fashion choices. They will wear the high fashion look they love to the Globes because it’s too risky to wear it to the Oscars. The pressure to look perfect is there, but it’s not as heavy which makes it more fun for the viewer.
What trends will we see at the Globes?
The Spring 2016 trends generally dictate the themes on the red carpet, so we might see off-shoulder gowns, soft romantic styles, loads of sparkle and even some Latin-inspired looks—just not all at the same time, hopefully!
Do actresses have a “go-to” gown style for award season?
The most universally flattering cut is the classic, strapless mermaid gown, which is seen far too often on the red carpet. It cinches you in at the waist, hugs your hips and then flares out at the bottom. It gives a nice shape and balances proportions. This silhouette can create a bombshell bod for you or enhance the one you already have. This is a “go-to” for many actresses since it’s a safe bet, so we will probably see many of these this season. But the ladies have been taking more risks on the red carpet so hopefully we will be seeing much more [diversity], particularly for the Globes since it has a more playful energy and is more fashion-oriented.
What about the men?
In the last few years, men have really been stepping up to the fashion plate, so to speak. Again, the Globes have a more relaxed environment as it’s more of a party (i.e. cocktails are served!) so we’ll probably be seeing men veer away from the classic black tie ensemble and mix it up with velvet or even subtle brocade blazers. The conservative way to stand out is with a classic tux done in gray or navy. As far as ties go, it’s a black tie event so men should wear a tie. Period.
