When Lady Gaga scored a home run during Super Bowl LI half time, I wasn’t surprised, I was impressed and proud. And it’s the “proud” part that many stars are never able to elicit from fans. But for those few who make that happen, and Gaga does, a new level of respect and loyalty is born.
Amid twinkling drones and a strong but quiet message that we all share the same country and heart, Gaga dove into the stadium like a fearless leader. She showcased the music people wanted to hear and she sang with the perfectionism of a superstar and the enthusiasm of the young girl who had dreamt of the moment. She shouted out family—because she could and because most of us would have done the same thing if we had the chance.
She reminded us that taking a break from competition is important and that music is a powerful tool. The words and voice paired with the intensity and energy of her performance transformed her into a personal cheerleader for anyone who was open to that. I think that’s where the “proud” comes in. That’s how that important connection happens. Who doesn’t want another person in their corner?
Whether you’re a Gaga fan or not, her Super Bowl messages can apply to us all— find common ground, practice kindness, let music inspire you, and find someone who makes you proud, who is proud of you, and who just might dive in head first to cheer you on.
