Robert Vaughn was an actor’s actor. Talented, hardworking and respected by fans and colleagues alike, Vaughn, who will be forever loved as The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’s Napoleon Solo, crossed genres to enjoy a successful career in television, film, and theater for over six decades. Vaughn passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016 at the age of 83, after recently being diagnosed with acute leukemia.

Hollywood insider Laurie Jacobson expressed her deep sadness over the loss of her friend and client, noting that during the shooting of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Vaughn was studying for his master’s degree. Vaughn’s thesis on the McCarthy black listings would make him the authority on the subject for nearly 50 years. Says Jacobson, “He was brilliant and involved and passionate and FUNNY. So many memories flashing through my mind right now…for which I am very grateful. I adored him and feel blessed to have known him.”

It is safe to say that Robert Vaughn’s résumé was a unique one for his generation. During a time when most actors tended to land in one place, the Academy Award-nominated actor seemed to effortlessly move between hit television series and iconic films with stops on Broadway and London’s West End— always doing what he loved brilliantly.

Vaughn leaves an impressive onscreen legacy, but perhaps one of the most valuable lessons we can learn from the actor is the importance of thinking for yourself and thinking outside of the box. Robert Vaughn drove his own career and chose paths that allowed him to showcase his talent. He never let one great experience keep him tied to one place. Nor should we.
