What Would Clockwise Mean Without Old-Fashioned Clocks?

Yvonne Balmer in Kerrville, Texas, writes:

With the digital age upon us in full force, do you think the terms “clockwise” and “counterclockwise” will eventually be removed from the dictionary? How will the weather people describe hurricanes if these words are no longer in use?

Marilyn responds:

I think analog clocks will stay with us for a long time because they convey at-a-glance information that digital clocks do not. Analog faces convey where we are within the hour–time passed and time to come. Digital faces show us only the exact time at the moment, which is usually beside the point. One must do mental math to see how much time remains before we’re late for our next appointment, etc.

Regardless, I think the terms “clockwise” and “counterclockwise” will stay with us even if analog clocks do not, because no nicely-descriptive alternative exists. They would just fall into the category of words whose original meaning is forgotten.
