Do Your Doctors Agree? Or Not?

Sheryl K. in Kalamazoo, Michigan, writes:

In general, how many doctors should one consult before deciding whether to have surgery?

Marilyn responds:

In most cases, I believe two is enough. Why? The first doctor has recommended surgery, and that’s a strong statement. If a second doctor agrees, I would be surprised if a third or fourth physician differed. However, if the second doctor does not completely agree, I think it’s time to stop, discuss the situation thoroughly with him or her, and then go back to the first doctor for the same kind of in-depth discussion before you make a decision. You’ve heard both sides, and seeking a third opinion won’t make a significant difference. You’re not trying to tally votes; you’re seeking advice from highly-qualified professionals so you can make an informed decision yourself.
