Julianne Hough, the two-time Dancing with the Stars champ, 26, who turned her mirror-ball trophy wins into acting roles in movies including Footloose, Safe Haven and Rock of Ages, returns on March 16 to the ABC show that made her a star.
Why come back to DWTS as a judge instead of a dancer? “Being a dancer is a big commitment and it didn’t allow me time to focus on other aspects of my career. Being a judge is a great way to be a part of the show, but still have time for my other dreams and aspirations.”
Are you going to be OK stirring up controversy if you think you’re right, but others disagree with your opinion? “Whatever I say comes from a place of love. So I hope that if there is controversy, they know that it’s coming from a good place.”
What’s new for the show this season? “There’s going to be something where the judges work with the competitors. They’re still figuring that out, but I know that they’re going to try new things that they’ve never done before.”
You’re going to be playing Sandy on FOX’s live Grease musical later this year. Is it true that the original movie made you want to be an entertainer? “It absolutely is. I grew up in a Mormon household and the movie was PG-13, so I wasn’t allowed to watch it. But every time my parents were out of the house, I would sneak in and watch it, and my siblings and I would do the dances. I would pretend I was Sandy.”
