Love is in the air, even in Hollywood. To celebrate the season of romance, Parade asked celebrities including Michael Weatherly, John Krasinski and Rachel Bloom to name their all-time favorite couples, on- or offscreen.
Aidan Quinn (Elementary): Michelle and Barack Obama. They seem to really have tremendous affection and love for each other, and yet stay very individual. You don’t see, like, one is dominating the other and the other has to take the second-class seat because of it. That’s Barack and Michelle. They are a perfect role model for relationships.
Jenna Coleman (Masterpiece’s Victoria): Other than Victoria and Albert, maybe Antony and Cleopatra, that yin and yang of two complete opposites that totally fit in character and in temperament, but also Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Their story is a great one. Their movies together are some of my favorite films.
John Krasinski (The Hollars): My favorite couple is without a doubt my parents. They’re probably more in love than they were the day they met. For me, my billboard will always be trying to be a quarter as good of people as my parents are.
Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend): I’ve got to say Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice, specifically the BBC miniseries with Colin Firth. When he walks out of the water … hmm!
Sal Valentinetti (America’s Got Talent): Frankie Sinatra and Ava Gardner, because Ava Gardner was Sinatra’s one true love. And everybody should learn from it; they should never let go of true love, should never let it slip through your fingers. That’s what happened with Frank Sinatra. It actually broke his heart.
Juan Diego Botto (Good Behavior): The first thing that comes to mind is Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. I read them both when I was in college and loved them and loved their story. It’s a very fascinating story.
Russell Hornsby (Fences/Grimm): My favorite couple, I think, would have to be James and Florida Evans from Good Times [the TV series that ran from 1974 to 1979]. It was that real, unconditional love, dealing with hard times, dealing with the crooked and the straights of life, and they stuck it out. I really got a sense that they just loved each other unconditionally.
Eric McCormack (Travelers): I think The Night Of is extraordinary, and John Turturro and the other guy [Riz Ahmed] in the show have been nominated for Golden Globes and SAG, it’s fantastic. I watched the whole series on the plane on the way to New York and the way back. So my new favorite couple is John Turturro and the cat. If you see The Night Of, you will know why. It was the best love story of 2016. [But] my old answer would have been Annie Hall and Alvy Singer because Annie Hall is my favorite movie and my favorite romantic comedy.
Sundance Head (The Voice season 11 winner): My favorite couple is Chris Stapleton and his wife. They have a relationship similar to myself and my wife. They really love each other and support each other in their careers. She is entwined in his music, just like Misty is in mine, and it’s just beautiful to see them onstage loving each other through song. It’s just so inspirational. They’ve been able to achieve so much together, and I would be hard-pressed to say that either one could be successful without the other.
Nate Berkus (Married to Design: Nate & Jeremiah): I’m going to go with Barack and Michelle Obama, because I think that they embody the absolute best our country has to offer. They’re pretty spectacular.
Chris Hardwick (Talking Dead/The Wall): Chucky and Bride of Chucky because they’re two very specific souls who somehow found each other—and they made it work-ish. Their flaws were their strengths and they complemented each other. I think that’s probably a decent answer.
Jennifer Esposito (NCIS): My mind automatically goes to Lucy and Ricky and then Lucy and Ethel. I used to watch I Love Lucy when I was a kid and I just loved them. I grew up on them and used to watch them and thought it all worked out at the end of the day. Even though she got in trouble and he was mad at her, it all worked out at the end of the day and somehow that made me feel really happy. I don’t know why he couldn’t just put her in his [musical] show.
Michael Weatherly (Bull): Adam and Eve are my favorite couple because they kicked it all off.
Katherine Heigl (Doubt): My favorite couple right now is Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia from This Is Us. I just think they have the most lovely, communicative, supportive, loving relationship. They’re raising triplets; that’s got to be rough.
Adam Rodriguez (Criminal Minds): I’ve got to say Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. I think certainly onscreen, and I’ve got to believe offscreen for many, many years, they got what being in a relationship is all about—being able to laugh at all the challenges that come your way. I think that’s what people love so much about the show. We all find ourselves wanting to argue and they always manage to laugh about things instead of arguing about them—or laugh in the end at least.
Patricia Heaton (The Middle): Kate and William. I’m married to a Brit, so I’m a little bit in love with everything English, but I think they’re a fabulous couple.
Renée Felice Smith (NCIS: Los Angeles): I’d have to go way back to The Notebook. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. I don’t think anything will top that for me in terms of romantic leads. Their chemistry is palatable and they’re super-memorable.
Malin Akerman (Billions): I might be a bit of a romantic, but I’m just going to go classic: Romeo and Juliet. I just love them making the decision to let love conquer all. I think that’s beautiful and may they go on in the next life. I think that that is more powerful than anything.
Eric Christian Olsen (NCIS: Los Angeles): My favorite real couple is Michelle and Barack. Michelle gave that speech at the DNC and I was like, “Goddamn, she is amazing!” I wish she would have run for president. I think that watching them with those two kids, I think that they are great examples for how to navigate, obviously, an incredibly stressful job but still understand the core of us as people, as a family.
Barrett Foa (NCIS: Los Angeles): Maybe Carrie and Mr. Big [from Sex and the City]? But I have to say I was a little more of an Aidan fan. Mr. Big never did it for me. I’m not into fancy shoes. I’m more of a work-with-your-hands kind of guy.
Duane Henry (NCIS): My favorite couple would have to be—it’s a little bit cliché—but it has to be the Obamas. He’s obsessed with her. I don’t think he’d be where he is without her. Eight years, no scandals, nothing crazy. You got to tip your hat to that regardless of what you think of them, left or right. I think Michelle and Barack’s relationship is pretty inspirational.
