Wayne’s World Turns 25 and Returns to Theaters and DVD

In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, one of the hottest skits on Saturday Night Live featured Mike Myers and Dana Carvey as Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar, two aimless metal-heads performing Wayne’s World, a cable access show broadcast out of Wayne’s parents’ basement. In 1992, the movie Wayne’s World took the skit out of the basement and onto the big screen.

Now, for two days, it’s back.

Schwing!!!

Although it seems strange to think so, the character of Wayne did not make his first appearance on SNL. Seriously. He appeared on a couple of Canadian shows. Still played by Myers, Wayne first appeared in the skit “Wayne’s Power Minute.” When Myers came to SNL, so did Wayne.

This movie had so many great moments that people still quote and act out today. Who can forget the awesome scene in which Wayne, Garth, and a couple of friends lip sync to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody?” To this day, when that song comes on, folks still act like headbangers.

The movie also featured actors Rob Lowe, Tia Carrere, Lara Flynn Boyle, Chris Farley, Brian Doyle-Murray, Lee Tergensen, Michael DeLuise, as well as musicians Alice Cooper and Meatloaf.

One other fun fact: Wayne’s World was the second movie to be made from an SNL skit. The first? The Blues Brothers.

Wayne’s World is showing on February 7 and 8 at select theaters. Following the movie will be special footage as well as a discussion led by director Penelope Spheeris. For more info on where to go see Wayne’s World, visit www.waynesworld25.com.

If two nights aren’t enough, you can watch these guys over and over from your living room—err, basement—when the film arrives February 14 on iTunes with new-to-digital extras including director’s commentary and making-of featurette. Also on February 14, a Wayne’s World double feature will be available on DVD and Digital HD.

Watch some fun clips as you prepare yourself for a most excellent evening. Party on, Wayne. Party on, Garth!

Here’s a clip of Wayne’s Power Minute—the sketch that Wayne was born in. Mike Myers looks like he’s 16.
