Who are the top stars of 2016? IMDB today released lists of the Top 10 Stars and Top 10 Breakout Stars of 2016 based on actual page views from IMDb’s more than 250 million monthly unique visitors. The top stars consistently ranked highest on its weekly STARmeter chart throughout the year.
It’s no surprise that Australian actress Margot Robbie, who portrayed the colorful Harley Quinn in late summer’s Suicide Squad, was named the top star of 2016. Right behind her is Mother of Dragons Emilia Clarke, who starred in the romantic drama Me Before You, opposite Sam Claflin. Claflin did well himself, landing a place on the list for top breakout stars of the year. Israeli actress Gal Gadot took spot No. 6 in the list of top stars, having appeared in four films this year including Keeping Up with the Joneses and Criminal. Gadot also starred as Wonder Woman in this year’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and will get a full-length feature as Diana Prince next summer.
“Many of the women who charted on IMDb’s Top 10 Stars of 2016 list portrayed strong female protagonists in some of the biggest live-action titles of the year,” said Keith Simanton, IMDb’s Senior Film Editor. “From Suicide Squad and Deadpool to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, remarkable female characters were at the center of the action in 2016 – whether sprung from the pages of comic books or a galaxy far, far away.”
English actress Millie Bobby Brown was named the top breakout star of 2016, thanks to her role as Eleven in the popular Netflix original series Stranger Things, and was the third top star of the year.
