“It is another beautiful day at the Red Pony Saloon and continual soiree.”
This is how Henry Standing Bear answers the phone at the Red Pony on Longmire, a television show based on the “Walt Longmire” mystery books by Craig Johnson. The show, now on Netflix, was originally on A&E, but dropped after the third season after the network decided to revamp its slate (and skew to a younger demographic). It found a resurrection at Netflix, much to fans’ delight but it looks like the soiree will not continue after all. While Netflix has renewed the show for a sixth season, it turns out the sixth season will also be its last.
A 10-episode sixth and final season has been ordered and will debut on the streaming service sometime in 2017.
“We are grateful to Netflix for the opportunity to compose a closing chapter for these beloved characters that inspires lasting memories. Most importantly, we’re committed to delivering a dynamic and satisfying conclusion to our fans that rewards their longtime loyalty,” said executive producers Greer Shephard, Hunt Baldwin and John Coveny.
The show stars Australian actor Robert Taylor as the eponymous Sheriff Walt Longmire. Katee Sackhoff stars as Victoria “Vic” Moretti, his second-in-command, with Lou Diamond Phillips as Henry Standing Bear, Walt’s best friend and confidante and A Martinez as Walt’s nemesis, Jacob Nighthorse.
Will the final season see Vic and Walt finally consummating their series-long dance around a potential romance? Will Omar (Louis Herthum, Westworld) make another appearance with his inexplicable interest in guns and hunting? Will the Red Pony remain open long after the show is over? I guess we’ll have to wait until Season 6 to find out.
