Music City indeed. Last night pop superstar Lady Gaga, due to headline the halftime show at Super Bowl LI in Houston in 2017, popped into Nashville, Tennessee—specifically, a tiny neighborhood music joint called The 5 Spot, to perform (Gaga doesn’t just sing) a sampling of songs from her new album, Joanne, for 100 fans. Then two hours later, she opened the doors for another group of lucky fans selected by lottery, and did it all over again.
“I’m a singer-songwriter from New York City, and I’m coming through Nashville,” Lady Gaga said between songs. “But if you could do me this favor, tonight, if you could just call me ‘Joanne.’”
And they did. Fans chanted “Joanne! Joanne!” as Lady Gaga left the small stage to change from her rhinestone jacket and pink cowboy hat to a midriff-bearing T-shirt and pair of silver shorts. “Put your hands up! Everybody jump or I’m not coming out!”
Gaga, who had invited a group of 15 hearing-impaired people representing the group Not Impossible, who experienced the music courtesy of custom vests that vibrated to the music, then proceeded to leap into the crowd, swinging her microphone and ponytail in tandem for “Perfect Illusion,” the lead single from Joanne, due out October 21.
The show, which was streamed live on Bud Light’s Facebook page, was the first stop on her Dive Bar tour, a three-city jaunt with upcoming stops planned for October 20 and October 27 with locations still to be announced.
