With all the talk about global warming, I find it amazing that we fail to see “global swarming”–overpopulation–as the earth’s biggest problem. Other than religious concerns and political correctness, what prevents governments from addressing this real problem by asking couples to be aware of, and to take responsibility for curtailing depletion of the world’s limited resources?

Governments see aging, shrinking populations as an economic concern. They believe that a growing number of retired people in need of government support and a diminishing number of younger people working and paying taxes could spell economic trouble for systems that have developed over time for various reasons, not all of them wise.
