For the first time in The Voice history, a woman coach – Christina Aguilera — won the singing competition when her final team member Alisan Porter was named the Season 10 winner.
“To be honest, I can’t thank Alisan enough for choosing me as her coach,” Christina told Parade.com at a press conference after the Season 10 finale. “I was so moved and touched by her story from the minute I turned around at the Blind Auditions. She has been a blessing to not only me but to the show. She is the epitome of The Voice, and also an inspiration to other hardworking moms and any hardworking parent who also has a dream they want to accomplish.”
When the countdown was read by host Carson Daly, Laith Al-Saadi finished fourth, Hannah Huston placed third, and Adam Wakefield was the runner up. But each of them were actually winners because all four of the Top 4 received a free car from Nissan.
But for Alisan, it also meant she could put her past to rest. “I have retired Curly Sue,” she said. “She is dead. I am now the girl who won The Voice. I want you all to know that I waited 30 something years for that. It is so cool that that is how my career started. I am honored to have had a great career when I was young. But it has been decades since that was over and I have been wanting this.”
And coach Christina is sure that Alisan has all that she needs to make it in the music business.
“She truly has shown me that she has such an amazing ability to do this,” Christina said. “She’s been away from her kids, and kept up her stamina; she is such a hard worker. She is truly motivated and inspired me beyond belief. She is an incredible woman. This is the icing on the cake, but she was always a winner.”
Interestingly, Alisan had some help from a friend who was the runner-up in another singing competition: Adam Lambert from American Idol, who talked to her every day during the process, helping her with song choices, as well as wardrobe.
“He is so particular,” she says, “He was, ‘Your makeup tonight was perfect except for this.’ He cares for me because we came up together. I was there when he was on American Idol, so it was crazy to have him be able to do the same thing for me. He is touring the world and fronting for Queen. For him to take time to call me and say, ‘How are you doing? How is your spirit? How is your body? How is your soul?’ Those are the things that true friends really care about through all of this because you can really get trampled if you are not prepared for what this work is. It was not just go on stage and sing once a week. It was insane. I am definitely going to need to lay on a beach and re-center myself.
Once she has time to catch her breath, Alisan is ready to sit down and start thinking about what she wants her album to be, and she says it will probably reflect all of the things she has experienced over the past 10 months, which is how long it has been since she auditioned for The Voice up until being named the winner on Tuesday night.
“I’ve gone through a lot of things, so there is a lot to write about,” she says. “Whatever happens during that process, it will be something organic and natural. I don’t believe that there is one genre that you need to stick to as a singer. For a singer and songwriter like me, I sing from the heart. It is the first time I am coming into mainstream music, so I want to do what comes naturally. I am excited to see what that is. I am excited to start working and writing. It is going to happen soon.”
Alisan’s journey to get to The Voice was a long one, and in order to get this second chance, she has had to overcome her substance abuse, but she says even when she wasn’t in a good place, she always had hope.
“I guess it was my conscience,” she says. “I would always hear myself saying, ‘If you could just stop this, you could probably do all these things you want to do. If you could just get off the hamster wheel of numbing pain. I knew that if I changed my life, like really honestly changed my outlook, something eventually was going to happen. I was patient and I waited for an opportunity to present itself for me because I didn’t have it in me to go out and find it myself. I knew if it was meant to be, it would fall in my lap. I couldn’t ever imagine it would be something as amazing as this.”
