While it technically doesn’t celebrate its 30th anniversary until June 11, the hit movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off returns to the Big Screen for two days only—Sunday, May 15 and Wednesday, May 18 as part of the TCM Big Screen Classics series presented by Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies.
If you haven’t seen it (and we recommend that you take a day off to catch the flick!), it’s the story of Ferris Bueller, a high school senior who has been able to charm his way through cutting classes on a regular basis. When he decides to take just one more big “cut” day, hilarity ensues.
Matthew Broderick had been on Broadway and in other movies before this (War Games, anyone?), but this is the one that many people remember. Writer and Director John Hughes was at the top of his game. It even led to a short-lived TV show, Ferris Bueller, which ran from 1990-91. Starring Charlie Schlatter in the title role, it also featured someone else you may have heard of—Jennifer Aniston, who played Jeanie Bueller, the role played by Jennifer Grey in the movie.
The movie also kick started the career of Ben Stein, who played the absolutely unforgettable Economics teacher. His classic, “Bueller? Bueller?” has been mimicked and used in many other media as well as by pretty much everyone I’ve ever met in real life.
Also starring Alan Ruck as Cameron Frye, Mia Sara as Bueller’s girlfriend Sloane Peterson, and Jeffrey Jones as the principal on a mission Ed Rooney, the film is an absolute classic.
If you haven’t seen it on the big screen since 1986, go see it. If you’ve never seen it, cut school or work and head to the theater.
Actually, don’t cut. I could get in trouble for telling you to do that. And now I’m a responsible adult and everything. Pffffttttt…
In the meantime, here are some great clips from the movie. Enjoy!
The opening monologue is—well, to use some ‘80s slang, it’s totally awesome! It also contains one of the most widely repeated quotes in modern movies. Can you guess what it is?
