While guesting on Ellen on Thursday to promote her new movie, The Boss, Melissa McCarthy revealed that she will be reprising her role as Sookie St. James in Netflix’s upcoming Gilmore Girls revival.

“Literally about an hour and half ago, we figured out that I’m going to go back and do it and I am so excited,” McCarthy told the talk show host. “And it’s going to be amazing. [Creator] Amy Sherman-Palladino is going to squeeze me in to do it. I’m very happy to go back to Stars Hollow.  I’m just really excited about that. So it just happened. I got asked a lot about it, and as of not even two hours ago, it’s happening.”

McCarthy played Lorelai’s (Lauren Graham) best friend on the series for seven years, but when the rest of the cast was asked to return, apparently Sherman-Palladino and McCarthy got their wires crossed.

Sherman-Palladino thought that McCarthy’s busy schedule — in addition to promoting The Boss, she is working on the female Ghostbusters remake — might make it impossible for her to find time.

Even so Sherman-Palladino said in a TV Line interview, “The thing I have said is, ‘Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene. Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] — even if for just a cameo — we would be totally game. And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out.”

Apparently, McCathy never got that message and thought she had not been asked back. She tweeted, “Sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow. Wish them all the best!!”

But all’s well that ends well, and McCarthy will join Graham (Lorelai), Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore), Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore), Scott Patterson (Luke Danes), Keiko Agena (Lane Kim), Sean Gunn (Kirk Gleason), Yanic Truesdale (Michel Gerard), Matt Czuchry (Logan Huntzberger), Liza Weil (Paris Geller), Milo Ventimiglia (Jess Mariano), Jared Padalecki (Dean Forester), David Sutcliffe (Christopher Hayden), Danny Strong (Doyle McMaster), Vanessa Marano (April Nardini), Todd Lowe (Zach Van Gerbig), Emily Kuroda (Mrs. Kim), Sally Struthers (Babette Dell), Michael Winters (Taylor Doose), Tanc Sade (Finn), Jackson Douglas (Jackson Belleville), Liz Torres (Miss Patty), Rose Abdoo (Gypsy), Gregg Henry (Mitchum Huntzberger), John Cabrera (Brian Fuller), and Aris Alvarado (Caesar) in the four 90-minute Netflix movies that will each cover a season: winter, spring, summer and fall.

No release date has yet been announced.
