Jon LaBadie in Reston, Virginia, writes:
I’m writing regarding your answer to the question about why our calendars start the week with Sunday, yet we call Saturday and Sunday weekend days. (January 3, 2016) When we display books on a shelf, to keep them ordered and upright, we place one support in front of the first book and another support after the last book. These supports are called “bookends.” By analogy, Sunday and Saturday support our busy and hectic work week. Respectively, they are placed before the first weekday and after the last weekday and are called “weekends.”
Marilyn responds:
Ha, ha. Good one, Jon!
