Season 3 of When Calls the Heart premiered last Sunday and in this week’s episode “A Time to Speak” we find Abigail still reeling after the discovery of Frank’s past as an outlaw, even as Frank assures everyone he is a changed man. While the citizens of Hope Valley begin to turn their backs on their once beloved pastor, Elizabeth sets out to prove she’s a real frontier woman, impressing Jack with her new confidence. And while Bill enlists Jack’s help to settle a grudge with Frank’s old gang, Frank makes a drastic decision, leaving Abigail with a heavy heart before taking a surprising stand.

In an exclusive to Parade, Daniel Lissing and Erin Krakow revealed their own experiences braving the frontier:

Daniel Lissing: “I enjoyed camping when I was a kid. I was a Cub and a Scout in Sydney and we would go into the bush often. I think it’s important to be in nature and connect to that, especially when you live in the city. Sitting around the campfire and telling stories – there’s an important peace to that. I believe that everyone should spend a little time in nature. It’s good for the soul. I do that as much as I can.”

Erin Krakow: “I went to camp when I was a kid but instead of sitting around the campfire telling ghost stories and making s’mores, I was putting on plays and musicals! All the fun, none of the critters ;o)”

And no spiders, I imagine.

When Calls the Heart airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on Hallmark Channel.
