Commemorating Loved Ones

Charita Poe in Burke, Virginia, writes:

You stated that you think the yearly commemoration of loved ones on the dates of their deaths is “morbid and unhealthy.” (December 26, 2015) I have the opposite opinion. I think it’s an uplifting and respectful thing to do, and I feel good doing it. But then again, I’m very religious. The saints are commemorated yearly on their death days, so I also do the same thing for the people in my life who have departed. In fact, in my church we commemorate deceased individuals from my church parish on or near their death days each year. I respect you, and you’re certainly entitled to your opinion, but I wanted to inform you that there are people, including myself, who have a contrary opinion to yours about this practice.

Marilyn responds:

Thank you for the enlightenment, Charita! I’m happy to hear that you find the practice inspiring.
