I read your reply to the question about whether algebra should be required in school. (December 6, 2015) I loved your answer. I am a professional artist, and I teach the subject, too. Many people think I do not need mathematics in my profession. This is so far from the truth! Creating artwork nearly always employs problem solving, from the first decision of material use and subject matter continuing through every nuance of the creative process. I also use simple algebra to increase the size of my paintings proportionately. Creating the illusion of distance, especially when painting complex architecture, uses mathematical logic. (Did you ever look at M.C. Escher’s pieces and wonder how much math he studied?!) I took every math and logic class I could in school, and it has been a wonderful tool for my “right brain” profession for many years. Good for you for promoting this brain building discipline!
Marilyn responds:
Thank you, Jane. You must be one smart cookie to have recognized the brain-building properties of math back when you were still in school.
