When it comes to photographing the residences of famous people, Evan Joseph is the “it” guy. He has been around the globe shooting the homes of Sting and Trudie Styler, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jon Stewart, Lenny Kravitz, Julian Schnabel, Rupert Murdoch, Naomi Campbell, Jon Bon Jovi, Joan Rivers, Alex Rodriguez, Puff Daddy, Orlando Bloom, Donald Trump and many others.
Considered New York City’s leading architectural photographer, when Joseph is not busy shooting $40 million dollar properties, he can be found perched on the edge of a rooftop waiting for the magic hour or dangling over a skyscraper from the open door of a helicopter, 500 feet over the city, rigged on wires with an arsenal of lenses and cameras that can be deployed in a heartbeat.
Joseph is drawn to the intoxicating canvas that is New York from its highest peaks—where weather and light mixes with glass, steel and stone. Whether he’s reinterpreting a beloved landmark or shooting from the grid below, he twists, turns and climbs to capture the perfect moment when light and geometry transforms into color and composition.
His latest photo-driven book, New York From Above (9 Square Editions, February 2, 2016), is a true labor of love. His mission? To find that single perfect spot in the air over New York Harbor where the tops of the Empire State Building, One World Trade Center and the Chrysler Building align like a constellation. Featured in the book are never-before-seen gems from Joseph’s private collection including the the Woolworth Building, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Madison Square Garden, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty and other secret New York landscapes only visible from above.
In order to make this book, Joseph gained access to some of the most exclusive balconies in the city. He shares these views usually reserved for privileged corner offices, penthouses and private pilots. “This is my New York,” says Joseph. “The city I fall in love with every time I take to the skies.”
Who is the kind of man who loves hovering over rooftops and dangling over skyscrapers from helicopters? Joseph shared five cool things about himself. Click through the gallery to read them all.
