My Romance with David Bowie

Growing up, I confess I was just a casual fan of David Bowie. I was in my tweens when “China Girl” came out and subsequently the song was used to make fun of me—the only Asian in school in a southern town.

Though I later was able to appreciate the song it was only when I saw Labryinth and fell spellbound with the fantasy of the film and specifically Bowie’s song “When the World Falls Down” that my romance with him began.

Our romance was shaped even further with one of my all-time favorites of his, “Modern Love.”

I enjoyed his music over the years and even got a chuckle out of his ability to laugh at himself when he did the 2013 video “The Stars” with Tilda Swinton poking fun at both of their androgynous looks (and similarities to each other).

Like the world, I was saddened to hear of Bowie’s death after an 18-month battle with cancer at the age of 69. The realization of how much Bowie shaped my musical tastes over the years only struck me upon hearing of his death.

My love for his music will never die, but sadly the music world is facing some Ch-Ch-Changes…
