Photos: What’s New on TV and Cable in January 2016

On January 3, brand-new series will begin to air as the 2015-2016 midseason premieres on broadcast, streaming and cable TV. Following is a description of the new shows and a photo gallery as well.

SUNDAY, JANUARY  3

Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life, 8:30 p.m ET (FOX)

Cooper still doesn’t have the job he wants; he’s accidentally fallen in love with his across-the-hall neighbor, Kelly Bishop (Meaghan Rath); one of his roommates, Neal (Charlie Saxton), just can’t seem to dump his bodybuilder girlfriend; his other roommate, Barry (James Earl), is a “lovable jackass” who can’t stop getting into trouble; and his 40-year-old-brother, Josh (Justin Bartha) is constantly popping in to hang with the fellas and get some peace from his wife, Leslie (Liza Lapira), and their two kids. The one thing they do have is each other.

Bordertown, 9:30 p.m. ET (FOX)

Bodertown is a new animated comedy about two families living in a Southwest desert town on the U.S.-Mexico border. As the Gonzalez and the Buckwald families’ paths begin to cross, the two families soon become bound by romance, conflict and, perhaps most importantly, friendship—a word that means the same, no matter what side of the border you’re from. Starring: Rob Kazinsky (Jimmy Pritchard), Tim DeKay (Duval Pritchard), Dilshad Vadsaria (Mary Goodwin), Adhir Kalyan (Otto Goodwin), Ciara Bravo (Gracie Pritchard), Vanessa Lengies (Alexa)

Monday, Jan. 4

Superstore, 8 p.m. ET (NBC)

America Ferrera and Ben Feldman star in this workplace comedy about a unique family of employees at a super-size megastore. Superstore follows Amy (Ferrera), the store’s most stalwart employee as well as the glue holding the place together, and newly hired Jonah (Feldman), a naive dreamer determined to prove work doesn’t have to be boring. Their fellow associates include the sardonic Garrett (Colton Dunn), the ambitious Mateo (Nico Santos) and the sweet pregnant teenager, Cheyenne (Nichole Bloom). Overseeing them all is Glenn (Mark McKinney) the store’s affable, clueless store manager, and Dina (Lauren Ash), the aggressive assistant manager who lives by a very specific code—namely the store’s employee handbook.

Superhuman, 8 p.m. ET (FOX)

Kal Penn hosts the jaw-dropping special, which will test the abilities of 12 ordinary people to use their extraordinary skills to win a $100,000 grand prize. Each of the contestants possesses a distinct, nearly super-human ability in fields such as memory, hearing, taste, touch, smell and sight. The contestants will be challenged to push their skills to the limit to determine if they are Superhuman enough to win the $100,000.

Telenovela, 8:30 p.m. ET (NBC)

Eva Longoria stars in this half-hour comedy as Ana Sofia, the star of a popular Spanish language soap opera.  One problem, she doesn’t speak any Spanish. Other problems? Ana must manage a new boss, jealous cast mates and high-maintenance best friends—and that’s all before her ex-husband is hired as her new on-screen love interest. The cast includes Jencarlos Canela, Diana Maria Riva, Jose Moreno Brooks, Alex Meneses, Amaury Nolasco, Jadyn Douglas and Izzy Diaz.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 7

My Diet Is Better Than Yours, 8 p.m. ET (ABC)

Hosted by Shaun T, creator of the workout sensation “Insanity,” the new reality series features celebrity trainers coaching average Americans to lose weight and get in shape. Each trainer brings his/her own individually designed and wildly diverse diet and exercise plan to their contestant, and works with them to change their lives and prove that My Diet Is Better Than Yours. In the end, one team will reign victorious.

Angel From Hell, 9:30 p.m. ET (CBS)

Starring Jane Lynch, Angel From Hell, is a new, single camera comedy about Amy (Lynch), a colorful, brassy woman who insinuates herself into Allison’s (Maggie Lawson) organized and seemingly perfect life, claiming to be her “guardian angel.”

Shades of Blue, 10 p.m. ET (NBC)

Harlee Santos (Jennifer Lopez) is a charismatic single mother and resourceful detective at the heart of a tight-knit crew of Brooklyn detectives, led by enigmatic Lt. Matt Wozniak (Ray Liotta), who often leads the team to step outside the limitations of the law in order to effectively protect their precinct and their own. As a big illegal job looms on the horizon, the FBI catches Harlee in the act and pits her against her own unit. As a newly turned informant, Harlee struggles to safeguard her on-the-job family and avoid arrest in order to stay with her daughter. The cast includes Warren Kole, Drea de Matteo, Dayo Okeniyi, Vincent Laresca, Hampton Fluker and Sarah Jeffery.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 12

Shadowhunters  9 p.m. ET (Freeform)

Based on the bestselling young adult fantasy book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, Shadowhunters follows 18-year-old Clary Fray, who finds out on her birthday that she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters—human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend, Simon. Starring: Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland, Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray and Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood. 

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13

Second Chance, 9 p.m. ET (FOX)

A disgraced, 75-year-old ex-sheriff, whose life ends at the hands of corrupt cops, is brought back to lifeby a pair of young tech scientists who are founders of a social networking empire, and given a second chance as a 35-year-old with unpredictable, near-superhuman abilities. Starring Adhir Kalyan, Vanessa Lengies, Dilshad Vadsaria, Rob Kazinsky, Ciara Bravo and Tim DeKay.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 14
Colony, 10 p.m. ET (USA)

Josh Holloway stars as former FBI agent Will Bowman and Sarah Wayne Callies stars as his wife, Katie, in the series which takes place in a dangerous world of divided ideologies. After being separated from their son during an invasion by mysterious forces, Will and Katie are willing to do whatever is necessary to be reunited with him. Thus, when the powerful Proxy Snyder (Peter Jacobson) offers Will a chance to get his son back if he will collaborate with the occupational government, Will and Katie find themselves faced with the toughest decision of their lives.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 17

Billions, 10 P.M. ET (Showtime)

Billions is a contemporary drama that melds the worlds of ultra-wealth, influence and corruption as personified in two highly ambitious opposing figures: hard-charging, blue-blooded, politically connected U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) and brilliant, calculating, blue-collar billionaire hedge fund king, Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Damian Lewis). Set amongst the Machiavellian machinations of New York City power politics and finance, Billions weaves a complex, intricate narrative featuring a high-stakes game of predator-versus-prey. Maggie Siff plays Wendy Rhoades, Chuck’s equally ambitious wife who also happens to be part of Axe Capital’s senior executive team, along with Malin Akerman, who stars as Lara Axelrod, Bobby’s loyal and street-smart wife.

Mercy Street, 10 p.m. ET (PBS)

Based on real events, Mercy Street takes viewers beyond the battlefield and into the lives of a distinctive cast of characters—doctors, nurses, contraband laborers and Southern loyalists—who intersect in the chaotic world of Union-occupied Alexandria, Virginia, and the Mansion House Hospital in the early years of the Civil War. Starring Josh Radnor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Gary Cole, Peter Gerety and Norbert Leo Butz.

Monday, Jan. 18

War & Peace, 9 p.m. ET (Lifetime, A&E, and History)

Set during Napoleon’s 1812 invasion of Russia, War and Peace is a story of passion, romance, scandal and deceit surrounding the rising and falling fortunes of five aristocratic  families—the Bezukhovs, Bolkonskys, Drubetskoys, Kuragins and Rostovs—in the waning days of imperial Russia. War and Peace’s lead is Andrei Bolkonsky (James Norton), a dashing and heroic young man who yearns for glory in war but finds only heartbreak and disillusionment that may, or may not, be cured by the lovely Natasha Rostov (Lily James), who desperately needs to marry well to save her family from financial ruin. Meanwhile, the awkward, illegitimate son Pierre Bezukhov (Paul Dano) suddenly finds himself in possession of great wealth and, consequently, at the mercy of fortune hunters eager to take advantage of his naiveté.

Thursday, Jan. 21

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, 8 p.m. ET (CW)

In the year 2166, the immortal villain Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) is on the verge of his final victory—total chaos and the utter destruction of humanity. As the world crumbles, the Time Master Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) takes matters into his own hands; he travels 150 years into the past to assemble a carefully selected team of heroes and rogues, who together will be… Legends. Legends also stars Brandon Routh, Victor Garber, Franz Drameh, Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Ciara Renée and Falk Hentschel.

Baskets, 10 p.m. ET (FX)

Chip Baskets (Zach Galifianakis) wants to follow his dream of being a French clown—however, reality keeps interfering. Saddled with financial difficulties, facing an impenetrable language barrier, he moves back home to Bakersfield with high hopes. There he is forced to confront his past while working as a rodeo clown and competing with his siblings for his mother’s approval and affection.

London Spy, 11 p.m. ET (BBC America)

London Spy begins with a chance romance between two people from two very different walks of life—one from the high-powered ranks of investment banking and the other from a world of clubbing and youthful excess. But their love story quickly unravels when the reclusive banker disappears under suspicious circumstances, exposing his real identity as a spy and forcing his lover down a dark path to reveal the truth. The five-part mystery stars Ben Whishaw as Danny, Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling and newcomer Edward Holcroft.

Saturday, Jan. 23

Chelsea Does (Netflix)

Chelsea Does is is a four part docu-series featuring Chelsea Handler exploring four topics of personal and universal fascination: marriage, racism, Silicon Valley and drugs.

Sunday, Jan. 24
The X-Files, 7 p.m. ET—time is approximate following the NFC Championship Game (FOX)

The next mind-bending chapter of The X-Files debuts with a special two-night event starring returning cast members David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Mitch Pileggi and William B. Davis. Then continues in its regular time period premiere on Monday, Jan. at 8 p.m. ET.

Monday, Jan. 25

Lucifer, 9 p.m. ET (FOX)

Lucifer is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) has abandoned his throne and retired to L.A., where he owns Lux, an upscale nightclub. Lucifer is enjoying his retirement, indulging in a few of his favorite things—wine, women and song—when a beautiful pop star is brutally murdered outside of Lux. For the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him as a result of this murder. Compassion? Sympathy? The very thought disturbs him—as well as his best friend and confidante, Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt), a fierce demon in the form of a beautiful young woman. The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective Chloe Dancer (Lauren German), who initially is dismissive of Lucifer. But she becomes intrigued by his talent for drawing out people’s secrets and his desire to dispense justice, doling out punishment to those who deserve it.

Recovery Road, 9 p.m. ET (Freeform)

Recovery Road, based on the popular young adult novel by Blake Nelson, focuses on a teenage girl dealing with addiction. Maddie has a reputation as a party girl who doesn’t think she has a problem, until she’s confronted one day by her school guidance counselor and is forced to choose between expulsion and rehab. Maddie makes the difficult decision to live with other recovering addicts at a sober living facility while facing the daily pressures of teenage life. Recovery Road stars Jessica Sula as Maddie, Sebastian De Souza, Sharon Leal, Alexis Carra, Kyla Pratt, Daniel Franzese and David Witts.

Tuesday, Jan. 26

Outsiders, 9 p.m. (WGN America)

Outsiders explores an epic battle as the Farrell Clan, a tight-knit family of renegades who have lived atop the rugged Shay Mountain for more than 200 years, fight to defend their land and their way of life from the town below and anyone who would dare to challenge them. Outsiders stars Ryan Hurst as Lil Foster, Gillian Alexy as G’Winveer and Joe Anderson as Asa.

Sunday, Jan. 31

Grease Live!, 7 p.m. ET (FOX, live on East Coast only)

Julianne Hough, Aaron Tveit and Vanessa Hudgens will take on the leads role in this first-ever live television production of Grease, which will re-imagine the hit crossover musical for an entirely new generation.  Hough stars as the angelic Sandy—Rydell High’s most talked-about newcomer—Tveit is her “summer love” Danny Zuko and Hudgens is iconic bad girl Rizzo.
