For an institution that’s 90 years old (on Nov. 28), the Grand Ole Opry is as hip as the “it” town where it’s located.

While fans of country music have been gathering around the radio to listen to their Grand Ole Opry favorites for nearly a century, the broadcast and venue now attract all sorts of folks, including cast members of ABC’s hit series Nashville, who often perform there.

10 Quotes About the Grand Ole Opry from Opry Members

Those who make a pilgrimage to Nashville to watch the show live at the Grand Ole Opry House or the historic Ryman Auditorium—or listen to it on 650 AM WSM or online (download the Opry app at mobileroadie.com)—seem to appreciate its link to the past and future. It is perhaps the only show that features three generations of performers—legends, superstars and hot newcomers—all on one stage.

Grand Ole Opry performers “write another page of country music history with every performance,” says Pete Fisher, Opry vice president and general manager.

The audience never knows who will shake up the advertised lineup by popping in for a performance, from country greats like Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood to unexpected artists such as Barry Gibb, Steven Tyler, NBC news anchor and bassist Lester Holt or Mumford & Sons.

Performing at the Opry “feels like playing in your living room with the closest of your family and friends,” says Carrie Underwood, an Opry member. “It’s all about being a part of a legacy. It is home.”
