Is This Bet Off?

Mel Flitter in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, writes:

Say that Michael and Matthew go to a baseball game and bet on a player. Michael says that Jones will get at least two hits, and Matthew says he won’t. Jones gets a hit in the first inning but twists his ankle in the second inning and is taken out of the game. Matthew says he won the bet because Jones didn’t get two hits. Michael says Jones didn’t have a chance and that the situation is the same as a horse that gets scratched–the bettor gets his or her money back. What do you think?

Marilyn responds:

I think Matthew wins the bet. If Jones had been injured before the game started, then the bet would be off–like a horse that gets scratched before the race starts. But Jones was injured later. The situation is more like a horse that stumbles and falls during the first or second furlong.
