Does Intelligence Induce Loneliness?

Dan in Liverpool, England, writes:

Do you find that your intelligence makes you feel lonely? I’m nowhere near as smart as you, and I feel like an alien. Do you have any good ideas about what to do about this?

Marilyn responds:

I never feel lonely, but I do sometimes feel like an alien, usually while reading the news! Anyway, I suggest joining any kind of club that orients around an interest of yours. But not for the overall social interaction, which you probably won’t enjoy. (You sound introverted.) Instead, join for the opportunity to find someone like yourself, either as a friend or much more. Remember, it takes only one other person to make that feeling of loneliness disappear, maybe forever. Stick with a particular group for at least a couple of months: It may take time to feel comfortable around new people (especially if they already know each other) and get to know them. After a while, if the prospects don’t look good, try another club.
