At the UK premiere for her new film Divergent, a fan asked Kate Winslet to sign a photo of herself. The request isn’t completely out of the ordinary, but since the photo in question is the nude portrait from Titanic, the actress didn’t oblige.
“I don’t sign that [picture]. It feels very uncomfortable,” Winslet told Yahoo Movies UK after the incident. “Why would you do that? People ask me to sign that [picture] a lot.”
The picture, of course, is from the sketch Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) draws of Winslet’s character Rose in Titanic. Rose asks to be drawn “like one of your French girls.” The resulting portrait is of Winslet wearing the film’s “Heart of the Ocean” necklace and nothing else.
“There’s a photo of it as well that someone has lifted from a still of the film, and that photo gets passed around too. I’m like ‘No!’ I didn’t mean for it to be a photograph that I would end up seeing still 17 years later,” Winslet said.“It’s still haunting me. It’s quite funny really,” she continued with a laugh.
Winslet has since moved on to other Hollywood blockbuster films like Divergent, where she plays the villainous Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews. In the same interview, the 38-year-old actress compared the worldwide celebrity phenomenon she and DiCaprio went through around Titanic to what Divergent leads Shailene Woodley and Theo James are experiencing.
“What Shai and Theo are going through right now is exactly the same as what Kate and Leo were going through,” she reflected. “It really is no different. In fact, I think it’s probably harder for them, because of the digital world… It’s just happening much faster for them than it probably did for us.”
