Taylor Swift has a lot of famous friends, but last night at the latest Los Angeles stop of her 1989 World Tour, she was joined by one of our favorites.
Telling the crowd, “this singer, she’s only played in coffee houses before, she’s never played in a big venue like this so please make her feel welcome. Her name is Phoebe Buffay.”
And with that, Lisa Kudrow channeled her famed Friends character to duet on her signature song “Smelly Cat.” Phoebe even gave Taylor tips as they went along, instructing, “that was good but you have to really feel the lyrics.” After showing Taylor how to sing, she reassured the superstar, “you’ll get it, you’ll get there.”
This isn’t Taylor’s first Friends inclusion on the 1989 tour. Two nights ago (also at the Staples Center), she brought Kudrow’s co-star Matt LeBlanc (Joey) onstage, and a few nights before at a stop in Santa Clara, California, she was joined onstage by Julia Roberts, who famously guest starred on the series’ 1996 post-game episode, aptly titled “The One After the Superbowl.”
With all these Friends connections, we can’t help but propose an idea: If a reunion show does ever happen, Tay could totally play a grown-up Emma Geller. Just saying!
